Day 2: Exploring Gobustan and Absheron

Begin your journey with a visit to Gobustan National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for its extensive collection of ancient petroglyphs. These rock carvings, dating from 5,000 to 40,000 years ago, offer a fascinating glimpse into prehistoric human life, depicting scenes of hunting, dancing, and rituals. The park’s rugged landscape, dotted with mud volcanoes and unusual geological formations, adds even more charm to the experience.

After a traditional Azerbaijani lunch, continue to the Ateshgah Fire Temple in Surakhani. This pentagonal complex, built between the 17th and 18th centuries, served as a place of worship for Zoroastrians, Hindus, and Sikhs, all drawn by the natural gas vents that once created eternal flames. The temple’s architecture beautifully reflects a unique blend of religious influences, while its history is deeply rooted in ancient fire-worship traditions.

End the day at Yanar Dag, which translates as the “Burning Mountain.” This natural gas-fed fire has been burning continuously along the hillside for centuries, fascinating visitors from around the world. Watching the flames dance across the ground against the evening sky creates a mesmerizing and unforgettable sight.

Day 3: Adventures in Shamakhi and Gabala

Travel to Shamakhi to explore the historic Juma Mosque, one of the oldest mosques in the Caucasus, originally built in 743 AD. Despite several reconstructions caused by earthquakes and invasions, the mosque has preserved elements of its original design, standing as a symbol of Azerbaijan’s rich spiritual heritage.

Enjoy lunch in the serene forests of Ismayilli before continuing to Nohur Lake. This peaceful mountain lake, surrounded by lush greenery and the stunning Caucasus Mountains, offers a calm retreat. Its crystal-clear waters mirror the surrounding landscape, creating a picturesque setting perfect for relaxation and photography.

Arrive at Tufandag Mountain Resort, one of Azerbaijan’s premier destinations for both winter and summer tourism. The resort features 12 kilometers of slopes suitable for all skill levels, modern cable cars with breathtaking mountain panoramas, and a wide selection of hotels and restaurants.
